Marijuana Stores Still Outlawed in Enderby

The City of Enderby is creating a bylaw to regulate the establishment of marijuana retail outlets in preparation for numerous expected applications when and if the Federal Liberals legalize pot.

Mayor Greg McCune says no one really knows what to expect, but they are putting general ground rules in place now, so they don’t have any misunderstandings later.

“We’re just trying to put that in place so if someone does show up in Enderby and say ‘hey I want to rent this store front’, they will know the regulations as of when it’s adopted of what it will look like in our community.”

McCune says the bylaw covers a lot of areas.

“The security, the monitoring, the odor prevention and trying to find out as part of the license the back ground checks, all of that kind of stuff.”

McCune says no one really knows what Federal rules will be established, but his council is trying to be ahead of the game.

“We’re just trying to be proactive. If you don’t have those guidelines, then it’s a ton of work. We just want people to understand where our community stands and what it will look like.”

No marijuana business licenses for retail outlets will be issued in the interim until pot is legalized in Canada.
