Big Start For Carnival In Wonderland

Officials say the Carnival in Wonderland is off to a wonderful start.

Special events coordinator Vicki Proulx says it was a memorable opening weekend for the 58th annual Winter Carnival.

“We love that so many people are really adopting the theme. The parade was so spectacular, to see so many people dressed up as their favourite Alice In Wonderland characters, and of course there was a lot of winter wonderland too,” Proulx tells CJIB News.

Proulx says the wet weather didn’t impact the number of spectators for the parade, which had about 100 entries.

“We generally see people come out no matter what, and to see people come out, even though it was raining this year, was fantastic.”

Opening weekend events that were sold out included the mother-daughter tea at the Village Green Hotel and Suds ‘N Cider.

The second week of carnival will see a popular event hit the skies.

The hot air balloon festival will run Thursday to Sunday, weather permitting.

Proulx says moving it to the second week was a decision made by the North Okanagan Hot Air Balloon Society.

“They just felt that the weather might be a little more on their side if they moved it to a week later, and hopefully it will be. If they had of been flying this past weekend, they probably wouldn’t have been up in the air a lot.”

The Balloon Glow will be held Friday at Polson Park as long as its not too soggy.

An alternate site will be announced, if needed.

“If the location does change, we will let everyone know,” says Proulx.

Other events this week include Jopo House luncheons at the Vernon Lodge and Schubert Centre, the 47th annual Coca Cola pee wee hockey tournament at Civic Arena, and some free family events this weekend.

The carnival continues until Sunday.
