Teresa Durning seeking reelection with Stronger Vernon campaign

A member of Vernon city council will aim to keep her position in the council chambers.

Teresa Durning announced Monday, June 13, that she would run in the municipal election in October.

Durning stated she would continue to maintain her promise to be available to listen and discuss issues with the public, while also building a stronger Vernon.

“A stronger Vernon begins with fiscal responsibility, every dollar city hall spends belongs to the people who earned it,” the councillor said to her supporters at at her announcement event.

“Good governance means making thoughtful decisions, being accountable, and ensuring taxpayers receive value for investment, and we all know the taxpayer investment is significant and their burden in today’s economy is great.”

Along with fiscal responsibility, Durning outlined the other key focuses to her Stronger Vernon campaign.

Housing Choices and Transit Hubs – Supporting a broad range of housing options strategically located near transit to improve affordability, accessibility and mobility
Smart Growth Development – Encouraging development that follows smart growth principles, creating complete, connected, and sustainable neighborhoods
Economic Development – Promoting responsible construction and development as proven drivers of local economic growth, investment, and employment
Tourism Promotion – Leveraging Vernon’s new Active Living Centre and Cultural Centre to attract visitors, enhance community vibrancy, and strengthen the local economy
Regional Collaboration – Continuing to work cooperatively with community partners throughout the region to advance shared priorities and opportunities
Supporting the Official Community Plan – Maintaining consistency with Vernon’s newly adopted Official Community Plan to provide stability, certainty, and long-term planning for the community

“These priorities are not separate ideas, they are connected,” Durning stated.

“Fiscal responsibility creates confidence; confidence attracts investment; jobs support families; families strengthen neighbourhoods; strong neighbourhoods build a stronger Vernon.

“Everything starts with thoughtful leadership.”

Durning said she would remain a respectful, honest, and communicative councillor if reelected.

The local general election is scheduled for October 17.
