Area C contribution going to help Sovereign Lake Lodge renewal

The lodge renewal project at Sovereign Lake received a major contribution from local government last month.

In late-September, RDNO Electoral Area C provided $150,000 towards the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club’s Lodge Legacy Project.

The day lodge is over 30 years old and serves approximately 45,000 to 50,000 cross country skiers and snowshoers each winter. The renewal would see the facility expanded, accessibility and gathering spaces improved, and infrastructure modernized to be more energy efficient.

The money provided by the RDNO came through the Community Works fund.

“Sovereign Lake is much more than a ski lodge—it is a community asset that brings together families, youth, athletes, volunteers and visitors from around the world,” Amanda Shatzko, serving as Area C Director, said at the time.

“Investing $150,000 of Area C Community Works funding into this project is an investment in healthy communities, accessibility and the long-term strength of our outdoor recreation economy. Sovereign Lake has grown into an incredible success story, and we need infrastructure that can grow with it.”

With this contribution, approximately $4.85-million had been secured for the renewal project. That included $1.4-million from B.C. Parks and over $1.5-million in community, business and corporate donations.

“We are grateful to Director Shatzko and to RDNO Area C for this contribution to the lodge renewal project. Such regional support enables SLNC to continue offering exceptional outdoor experiences to all members of North Okanagan communities. As well, it aids in growing the local sport tourism economy for which we have an outstanding national and international reputation,” Michael Storey, Sovereign Lake Nordic Club (SNLC) Board Chair, stated.

“With this support, SLNC is poised to grow its reputation for hosting top‑tier Nordic events—from Canada Cups to the Sovereign 2 Silver Star Ski Marathon—and to pursue elite opportunities like a World Cup or World Masters. This gift strengthens a venue that strengthens our entire region.”

Expansion of the lodge was expected to begin in spring of 2027, with construction completion targeted for in 2028.
