Vernon Man Lights The Way For RCMP Day

Feb 1, 2018 | 9:29 AM

If you happen to be out tonight around Vernon and see a searchlight in the sky, think of the RCMP.

Andy Wylie, the man behind the Vimy Lane display at his home on 29th Street, will have the searchlight on from 7 pm to 10 pm. to honour the Mounties.

It`s RCMP day in Manitoba and Wylie thinks BC should have the same proclamation.

“You know they’re the best constabulary in the world. They got, just like every human institution they’ve got their problems. It’s the rock that western Canada was built on.”

Today marks the day in 1920, The RCMP was formed by the merging of the North-West Mounted Police and the Dominion Police of Eastern Canada.

” And I think especially in BC we have more officers than any other province and these people don’t have their own day, and I think you know, anyway, I just don’t think it’s right.”

He hopes to start a petition over the next several months to be presented to the government in time for next February 1st.

“And hopefully what we will be doing is get some little support out of the community and we will then get a petition and I’ve already talked to our M-L-A, Mr. Eric Foster, and he has agreed and hopefully we can get a province-wide BC RCMP Day.”

Wylie calls the RCMP one of the crown jewels of Canada.
