Lumby Considers Pet Controls

Lumby is going to take a look at drawing up a bylaw limiting the number of pets allowed per household.

Mayor Kevin Acton says it results from a complaint about feral cats within Village limits.

“Our bylaw officer tried to talk to the person that has the cats, but they don’t want to seem to fix them or do anything about the amount of animals that are coming or going from her property.”

Acton says there is no number that is being suggested for how many companion animals would be allowed.

“Not any specific number right now. I think more what we’re interested in is feral animals should be fixed so they don’t just continually breed and the problem doesn’t escalate.”

Staff will be directed to consider how a bylaw might be set up

“It probably will be like most bylaws that we have in our community. It would be based more on complaint. If you have a neighbour that’s not behaving fairly with animals we’ll have a bylaw in place that we can enforce.”

Staff will investigate other communities to see what is working.

Any bylaw would also likely designate on and off leash areas.

The bylaw officer is also recommending it encompass all possible animal issues, including residential, commercial and industrial zones, such as pet shops, guard dogs at industrial sites and exotic pets.
