North Okanagan-Shuswap School Board Review

The school board for the North Okanagan-Shuswap School District could take on a new look after next fall’s elections.

Government appointed Trustee Mike McKay will be writing a review on how best to build a new team.

McKay says there are a number of options to look at.

“One option is status quo, 9 trustees elected from the various wards. Another option would be reducing the number to 5 or 7 and looking at how those seats would be distributed.”

He says trustees have to recognize no matter whether they’re elected at large or in a ward system, they act as one.

“So yes, people may get elected from a particular area but once they sit at that table as an elected trustee, or even an appointed one in my case, our
mission and our purpose is to represent the best interest of the entire district.”

McKay says it will be important to get input from the public, which he hopes to begin over the next month.

He wants to have something to present to the Education Minister by the end of the year.

“So I would expect once we’ve completed our process, certainly by Christmas, I’ll be contacting the minister saying here’s what we’ve done, here’s the background of the work, here are the proposals and here’s my recommendation.”

He says it’s important to have the process done early enough so that people who may want to run have a good sense of things to make the necessary decisions.
