Capital Spending Approved For School District 83

North Okanagan-Shuswap Trustee Mike McKay has approved spending 700 thousand dollars of capital surplus funds.

That money can only go for items or projects that will produce a future benefit to the district.

“We’re going to be reporting out on that on an annual basis. The district’s technology plan will get some resources as well as a number of other areas, operations and maintenance and custodial.

One hundred and 90 thousand dollars is going for transportation needs.

Four hundred thousand dollars is going to information technology.

“As most district’s have done, we’re on a path of using technology more effectively for education. That initiative started a couple of years ago and w need to carry that through.”

McKay says to not to do so would deny kids enhanced learning opportunities.

He also approved an additional 30 thousand dollars to be put towards laptop computers for
teachers who travel to see students at their school to provide services.

Meanwhile, gave approval in principle to a Pleasant Valley Secondary trip to Europe, which is open to all grade 9 to 12 students in the district.

“I’ve never come across a student who hasn’t said wow this has changed my world view, changed my life. It’s always an eye opening experience. It’s not everyone who does or can go, but those who do certainly benefit from it.”

Students who sign up will visit Switzerland, Italy, France and Spain from March 19th to the 31st.

Trip organizer Paul Britton says this is at least the 34th year of PVSS taking students to Europe.

It is run through EF Education Tours.

Students will visit many historical sites, and take in the local culture.

McKay gave his approval along with the precautionary note stating the district and organizers will continue to monitor, and if world circumstances change parents and students need to know it could be cancelled.
