Salvation Army Issues One Bag Challenge

Sep 20, 2017 | 6:04 AM

The Salvation Army in Vernon is marking Food Hunger Awareness Week with its One Bag Challenge.

Lieutenant Stefan Reid hopes individuals and businesses will take part.

“People can help out by bringing in a bagful of groceries and challenging another individual, a business, a corporation.”

The Idea is to get other people to keep the food bank’s shelves stocked over the next few months.

“And we’re just asking people that if they do bring a bag that they challenge five people this year to see if we can really stock our shelves heading into Thanksgiving and the Christmas season.”

Mayor Akbal Mund got the ball rolling on this type of campaign last year and Reid says it paid off.

“Last year was the first year that the one bag challenge was initiated and we did see a significant number of bags of groceries come in. So we’re just hoping that the community can get on board again this year.”

Reid says they’ve given out five thousand food hampers so far this year.
