School District 83 Enrolment Up

Sep 13, 2017 | 7:28 AM

Enrolment is up in the North Okanagan-Shuswap School District.

Secretary-Treasurer Nicole Bittante reported at last evening’s school board meeting that indications are that the school district is up 83 students over what was projected in February.

That’s an increase of 100 full time equivalent students over enrolment last September.

As of September 7th the district’s enrolment was 6,159..

Final enrolment numbers will be in September 29th and will determine the final operating grant for the from the education ministry, which will be announced in December.

The meeting also heard that with the increase in enrolment and changes to the legislation around class size and composition, 44 new full time equivalency teachers have been hired.

Bittante reported that the enrolment increase combined with the restored class size and composition language, has resulted in additional divisions being added within the first few days of school to Highland Park, South Broadview, Salmon Arm West, Silver Creek, Ranchero and Sorrento schools.

She said with the district out of funding protection for the second year in a row, the increase in students will now generate additional revenue.

Most of this revenue will go directly to the classrooms to pay for teachers, educational assistants and classroom resources.
