Suspect Acquitted of Manslaughter

A North Okanagan manslaughter trial has come to an end with the suspect being found not guilty.

31 year old Logan Scott of Salmon Arm was acquitted in the death of Jillian McKinty who was found dead in her Armstrong home on Wolfenden Terrace in November 2013.

An autopsy showed she died of asphyxiation, which led to Scott being charged with manslaughter and theft after a nine month police probe.

Scott told police during an interview the 27 year old McKinty choked herself with a shirt while the pair were engaged in sexual intercourse.

While acquitted of the homicide, Scott was found guilty of the theft under $5,000 charge after he stole a laptop from the woman’s home.

Global Okanagan reports he was sentenced to one year probation with 50 hours of community service, and also ordered to pay $2,300 restitution to McKinty’s parents for the computer.

The verdict was issued in BC Supreme Court in Kelowna.

A neighbor who lived upstairs from McKinty testified in June she heard McKinty’s twin boys trying to wake up their mom on the morning of Nov. 27, 2013, and they were starting to panic when she didn’t respond.

The neighbor says she went downstairs and found McKinty laying on her bed, and she was cold to the touch, later pronounced dead.

The neighbor took the boys up to her home, and called 911.
