Lake Country resumes FireSmart green waste bin program

Apr 21, 2026 | 3:00 PM

Lake Country residents looking to reduce wildfire risk at home will once again have access to free green waste disposal through a seasonal program aimed at improving FireSmart readiness.

The Lake Country Fire Department has restarted its green waste bin initiative.

The program is funded through the FireSmart Community Funding and Supports program, administered by the Union of B.C. Municipalities and supported by the province. Residents can drop off grass, leaves, hedge clippings and tree prunings under five centimetres in circumference. The collected material will be chipped and repurposed for compost and trail use.

Lake Country Deputy Fire Chief Brent Penner said the program helps remove a common barrier for residents working to reduce wildfire risk around their homes.

“By taking action on steps to FireSmart their property, residents can dramatically increase their resistance to wildfire damage,” he said.

Officials say reducing yard waste and improving defensible space around homes helps improve community resilience and gives firefighters a better chance to protect properties during wildfire events.
