A long-time volunteer with the Vernon Winter Carnival Society has passed away.

In a social media post, Vernon Winter Carnival Society (VWCS) shared an obituary for Martha “Marti” Giroux.

Giroux was born in Enderby in 1950 and lived and worked in Vernon and Vancouver as a paralegal before semi-retiring and moving back to Vernon, where she volunteered with the VWCS, Vernon’s Together for Christmas, Vernon’s Wildlife Festival. She was also a volunteer foster for the SPACE and Okanagan Humane Society.

She passed away April 9 at the age of 76. A service will be held May 4 at the Pleasant Valley Funeral Home, and people were asked to make donations to the Vernon Okanagan Humane Society or the Salmon Arm RCMP in lieu of sending flowers.

In their post, VWCS said Giroux will be missed.

“Since the early 2000s, Marti was a constant presence at VWC, as well as with many other non-profit organizations, giving her time, energy, and care to something she truly loved: this community. Whether working behind the scenes in the office, lending a hand wherever it was needed, or going above and beyond in her role as a dedicated board member, her contributions shaped the festival in ways that will never be forgotten,” the post said.

“She worked tirelessly and took great pride in everything she did. Her love for carnival was truly a love for people, bringing joy, connection, and tradition to life year after year. In recognition of her incredible dedication, Marti was honoured with the Order of Jopo in 2023.”

Vernon Matters contacted the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP to ask if it was Giroux who was found deceased at the Vernon Winter Carnival office on April 9, but police said in an email they “don’t have any additional information for release at this time.”
