Trial for helicopter crash case to go in 2027

The accused in a serious helicopter crash three years ago will be on trial next April.

In August of 2023, a helicopter crashed into the Shuswap River near Mable Lake, east of Enderby, injuring three passengers and killing a therapy dog.

The alleged pilot fled the scene, but police later tracked down and arrested Vincent Porteous, who was charged with:

  • Criminal negligence causing bodily harm
  • Operating a conveyance in a manner dangerous tot he public and causing bodily harm
  • Failing to offer assistance to an injured person
  • Operating a helicopter without a license or permit
  • Operating a helicopter without a valid certificate or registration

The B.C. Prosecution Service said the trial of this case would be held at the Kelowna Law Courts starting April 19, 2027, and that it was expected to take two weeks to conclude.

In the meantime, Porteous will be due in court for a pre-trial conference on November 3. As of time of publication he was out of custody on a Release Order.
