Housing construction rebounded in Vernon, slowed in Kelowna, B.C.

Vernon’s housing construction sector seemingly recovered after a major slowdown in February.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) said 15 housing projects were started in Greater Vernon this March.

That was up from the just six starts in February, and also above the 15 housing projects started in March of 2025.

Of those new projects, eight were row houses, six were single homes, four were apartments, and two were demi-detached homes.

To date, a total of 46 housing projects had been started locally in 2026, down from the 56 starts int he same period of 2026.

CMHC said there were also 65 housing projects completed so far this year in Greater Vernon, including nine in March, but did not have comparable data from the year before.

Though Greater Vernon saw housing construction rebound in March, that was not the case for all of B.C., and especially not for Kelowna.

CMHC said there were just 15 housing projects started in Kelowna this March.

The agency said that was down annually, and also was about 1/25th of the 334 starts recorded in February.

Despite that major decline, a total of 559 new housing units had been started to date in Kelowna, which was up on an annual basis.

B.C. as a whole also recorded just 2,231 new housing project starts in March. That was down from the 2,379 starts last March, and marked a significant slowdown from the 3,334 starts in February.

However, B.C. had seen 9,634 housing starts as of the end of March, up from 7,685 in the first three months of 2025.

Canada as a whole meanwhile saw housing construction continue to make gains. There were 16,333 new housing starts across the nation in March, bringing the year-to-date total up to 32,808. Both those figures were up on an annual basis as March 2025 saw 14,459 starts in Canada for a three month total of 30,415.
