Former chiropractor to appeal sexual assault conviction

An appeal date has been set for a former Vernon chiropractor found guilty of sexual assault.

In January, Murray Kievit was found guilty on one court of sexual assault stemming from an incident in December of 2021.

Kievit was sentenced to nine months house arrest, to be followed by a three-year probation order. The court also imposed a DNA order as part of the sentence.

In February, Kievit filed a Notice of Appeal in B.C. Supreme Court, though he later abandoned his sentence appeal and proceeded with just appealing his conviction.

The B.C. Prosecution Service said the appeal application was accepted May 5, and the appeal was scheduled to be heard at the Vernon Law Courts on the week of June 1.

Kievit was also placed on Recognizance, meaning he was released on strict conditions from the court and could face monetary penalties if he did not adhere to the orders. The Prosecution Service did not provide specific details as to what those orders involved.
