Vernon’s housing construction surged in June

The local housing construction sector saw a significant increase in activity last month.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) said there were 22 housing projects started in Greater Vernon in June.

That was up from the 21 starts in May, and well above the six starts recorded in June of 2024.

The projects started in the most recent reporting month included eight row houses, six semi-detached homes, four single houses and four apartments.

To date, there have been 107 housing projects started in Greater Vernon this year. That was up from the 54 starts recorded in the same period in 2024.

CMHC did not provide as many details about Kelowna, but did say the Central Okanagan city saw 662 housing starts in June, which was up compared to the same month the year before.

There have been 1,814 housing starts in Kelowna so far this year, which CMHC said was down when compared to the same six-month period the year before.

The trend of increased housing construction in June was also seen provincially and nationally.

CMHC said there were 5,465 housing starts in British Columbia, part of the 23,282 starts recorded across Canada in June.

Those figures were up compared to the same month in 2024 which saw 3,343 housing starts in B.C. and 20,509 across the nation.

The year to date housing start total for British Columbia was recorded at 20,458 starts, which was down from the 22,287 starts recorded in the first six months of 2024.

However, Canada’s year-to-date housing start figure was at 114,369 in June, which was up when compared to 110,251 starts by June of 2024.
