Oct 16, 2026 | 11:06 AM

Vernon saw some modest gains in housing construction last month, though the sector has still seen a slow down on an annual basis.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) said Vernon had 11 new housing projects started this past September. Those involved eight single family homes, two semi-detached houses, and one apartment.

That figure was up from the previous September, when there CMHC recorded just nine housing starts in Vernon.

As of the end of the month however, Vernon had seen a total of 130 housing projects started locally, which was down from the 182 recorded in the same nine month period in 2025.

CMHC also noted there were a total of 20 housing projects completed in September for a year-to-date total of 242. While the monthly completions were down from the 39 in September of 2025, the agency did not provide a year-to-date total for that metric.

Meanwhile, CMHC also reported 126 housing starts in Kelowna this September, up from the 85 in the same month the year before.

However, a total of just 1,439 starts had been recorded in the Central Okanagan city so far this year, down from the 1,900 seen in the same period the year prior.

Provincially, housing construction also made gains in the latest reporting month.,

CMHC said there were 4,364 housing starts across B.C. this September, up from 2,922 in the same month the year before.

However, a total of just 30,991 starts had been recorded across the province so far this year, down from the 31,761 starts in the first nine months of 2025.
