Local event aims to teach young people leadership and conflict-resolution skills

The third annual What Happens Upstream Youth Conference will be held Monday to teach young people some important life skills.

Put on by the Okanagan Indian Band’s Youth Leadership Council and the What Happens Upstream Planning Committee, the event will have the theme of kʷu ʔasəlʔ aʔspuʔús, meaning “We are of two different hearts,” with a focus on “good conflict.”

The conference will bring young people from across the Okanagan together to connect with one another, as well as community members and service providers, to learn leadership and conflict-resolution skills.

“The theme recognizes that people will not always agree, but disagreement does not have to prevent people from listening to one another, working together and finding a path forward,” event organizers said in a release.

“Through the conference, young people will have opportunities to build practical communication and wellness skills that can help them navigate conflict effectively and with care.”

The conference will also aim to empower young people with the skills they can carry into the future as they navigate relationships, schools, workplaces and communities.
