Federal budget renews program to support wine sector

The federal government has committed to renewing the program that provides financial aid to the winery sector, which is being seen as welcome news.

In Budget 2026, the federal government committed to extend the Wine Sector Support Program with a $176.9-million investment over three years.

The program provides financial aid to licensed Canadian wineries to help them adapt to challenges and remain competitive.

“We welcome the federal government’s decision to continue investing in Canadian wine and appreciate its recognition of the industry’s contribution to Canada’s economy,” Dan Paszkowski, President and CEO of Wine Growers Canada, stated in a release in response to the budget commitment.

“Our shared objective is to create the conditions for wineries to expand production, purchase more Canadian grown grapes, invest in modern facilities and create jobs.”

The agency stated the Wine Sector Support Program was key to supporting private-sector participation and investing in the wine value chain.

“Our priority is ensuring Canadian grape farmers and wineries have the confidence to invest, innovate and expand,” Del Rollo, Chair of Wine Growers Canada, stated.

“We look forward to working with the federal government to ensure that this investment delivers the greatest possible benefits for Canadian farmers, wineries of every size and the communities that depend on them.”

Wine Growers Canada added an analysis of the sector found that increasing wine’s domestic market share to 51 per cent over the next 10 to 15 years could raise the industry’s Gross Domestic Product contribution from $10.1-billion to $13.7-billion annually, and the investment through the program could help strengthen the sector and reach those figures.
