460+ New Homes Online

Vernon already making significant progress to hit housing targets

Vernon’s first year under the housing target program saw some major gains in reaching the desired goal.

In September of 2025, the province challenged the city to reach a housing target of bringing 1,849 net new housing units online over a five year period.

A city staff report said the first year saw 468 net new homes come online in Vernon.

That total reflected 25 per cent of the desired new homes built over the five years, and was well above the first-year goal of 277 new units.

Of those new units 304 were rental, including 62 supportive and below market rentals, while the others were owned homes.

The city staff report noted the recent completion of four multi-family development projects were significant contributors to that initial gain, as they made up 199 of the new units that year.

The report went on to say the recent changes made to the Official Community Plan should continue to see progress made in building new homes and hitting that target as it “promotes residential density within the urban containment boundary and fosters a culture cooperation with the home building community.”

Looking ahead the report stated some actions would be taken to try to improve the process and get more homes built quickly. Those include streamlining the development application process; implement a tool to track the number of housing units that reach occupancy; review software systems to identify areas for improvement on housing supply data collection and share that information with the Ministry of Housing; and continue to build and strengthen partnerships with organizations, other levels of government, and stakeholders.
