Crisis Line Awareness Week

CMHA Vernon reminds people that local support is available

Mar 22, 2022 | 5:30 PM

March 20 to 26 is Crisis Line Awareness Week, and the Vernon and District branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA Vernon) is using the week to remind people that this service is available locally, and to ask for more support helping others.

CMHA Vernon said the past two years under the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the struggle people face with mental health issues, and during that time, they have also seen more people reach out for help.

The Interior Crisis Line Network (ICLN) has been answering a growing number of requests for support in the last few years, reflecting the need for people to seek help managing mental health concerns and challenges, ranging from feeling overwhelmed to high-risk situations.

The ICLN-Vernon site has felt the impact of the increased calls for support, and so far this year, the site has already answered 3,093 calls.

With this increase, CMHA Vernon is calling for more volunteers to support the community by getting involved with the crisis line network.

Volunteers will undergo extensive training to ensure they are equipped with the skills necessary to handle all call types, from emotional support and resource referrals to suicide and abuse prevention and intervention.

CMHA Vernon added that the ICLN is not just for people in a crisis, but can offer support to anyone who needs mental health assistance.

The ICLN can be reached 24/7 at 1-888-353-CARE (2273). There is also an online chat service available from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays.

People who wish to volunteer their time and get involved with the ICLN can call the administrative number at 604-256-3153, or visit the ICLN website.
