Betters have say on Canucks new GM

Dec 9, 2021 | 11:00 AM

The next general manager of the Vancouver Canucks has been a hot topic of debate since the firing of Jim Benning this week.

It’s also creating interest on PlayNow.com with bettors are placing wagers on who will be hired for the positon.

Laurence Gilman was the Canucks’ assistant GM from 2008 to 2014 and has been linked to the GM vacancy. Currently, 43 per cent of bets placed on PlayNow.com for the next Canucks GM are for Gilman, who opened at lofty 26.00 odds but has since catapulted to one of the favourites at 8.00 odds.

Gilman isn’t the only former Canucks executive on the list of candidates. Gilman worked under former GM Mike Gillis, whose odds of returning to his old role are listed at 50.00.

Other potential GMs include Montreal’s former GM Marc Bergevin (6.00) who is the odds-on favourite. His former assistant GM Scott Mellanby (8.50) is also in the mix, as are a pair of former Canuck players in Ryan Johnson (8.50) and Roberto Luongo (18.00).
