Vernon council approves 10 per cent increase to cemetery fees

Nov 9, 2021 | 4:00 PM

With the cemetery on Pleasant Valley Road operating at a loss, Vernon city council is moving forward with a plan to increase the fees associated with the site.

During Monday’s meeting, council voted in favour of receiving a report from administration calling for an increase to the cemetery rates by a minimum of 10 per cent in 2022 and 2023. Administration said the increase will make the rate equivalent with the regional average.

The fees will then change to see increases of three per cent annually to offset inflation.

The report also called for the addition of new revenue accounts, or user-defined fields, to enhance the city’s ability to track sales and performance by internment type, residency and time of sale.

It was also noted that a focus on building the care fund to improve the maintenance of the cemetery after it is closed and no longer generating revenue, needs to be established.

Council accepted the report and directed staff to amend the Fees and Charges Bylaw to reflect the cemetery fee increase.

The amended bylaw will be brought back before council at a later date.
