Property owners advised to self-report any wildfire damages

British Columbians whose properties were impacted by the wildfires this summer are asked to provide information to B.C. Assessment to help update their records.

In a release, Tracy Shymco with B.C. Assessment said the Crown corporation is available to assist people in determining their property’s accurate status as well as help address any questions and concerns in relation to impacts on property values.

“Affected property owners are encouraged to contact us to report any damage or loss, so that we can ensure we have an accurate assessment of your property which could impact changes to your 2022 property taxes,” said Shymko.

“It is vital that you connect with us before October 31 in order for your 2022 property assessment to be correctly calculated.”

Property assessments in B.C. are based on their market values as of July 1, 2021 and their physical condition and actual use as of October 31, 2021.

B.C. Assessment wants to know about the physical condition of properties affected by the wildfires, and owners are asked to self-report the condition of their properties. Affected owners that had been previously identified will receive self-reporting forms and are asked to fill them in and mail them to B.C. Assessment.

Owners who do not have access to their mail are urged to contact B.C. Assessment for assistance by calling 1-866-valueBC (1-866-825-8322) or online at the B.C. Assessment website. They will be asked to provide their property’s address and the state of its physical condition and the extent of any wildfire damage.
