Kelowna opens cooling options as Central Okanagan heat alert continues

The City of Kelowna is reminding residents and visitors to take precautions as a Yellow heat alert remains in effect for the Central Okanagan.

The city said people looking to escape the heat can use public facilities during regular operating hours, including recreation and activity centres, as well as local libraries.

Outdoor cooling options are also available at several city waterparks, including City Park Waterpark on Abbott Street, Ben Lee Waterpark on Houghton Road and Quilchena Splash Park on Quilchena Drive.

The city is also encouraging people to visit local parks and other indoor spaces such as restaurants, museums, art galleries, movie theatres and shopping malls to take breaks from the heat.

Officials said free outdoor recreation events are continuing during the heat alert, but participants in registered programs will be contacted directly if conditions lead to any changes.

The city said additional outreach efforts are underway to support vulnerable populations, including people sheltering outside or experiencing housing instability, in partnership with local community organizations.

Residents are encouraged to check on loved ones, especially seniors and those who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat, and to make a plan to stay cool.
