The Mayor of Vernon will throw his hat back in the ring and look to win a third term in his seat.

Victor Cumming announced he would run for mayor again in the fall election.

In a release, the Cumming said a lot had been accomplished over the past eight years under his leadership, including “delivering on the community’s referendum for the Active Living Centre (to be opened in the fall), tourism growth, housing growth (2300 units), much enhanced light industrial spaces providing sites for new and growing enterprises, upgraded transportation infrastructure for vehicles and other modes, wastewater treatment systems, and new and improved parks.”

He went on to say he was able to enhance relationships with other nearby communities and was an effective advocate in representing Vernon to the provincial government, which led to “vast improvements in social housing, wildfire risk reduction activities in our drinking water catchment lands, in capital projects funding and approvals, and in joint advocacy on Valley-wide transportation infrastructure.”

The mayor added he was also able to lead efforts on sub-regional activities through the past near-decade in the roll involving managing Greater Vernon Water, enhancing the trails network, securing additional natural paces for local environment and public enjoyment, and designing and starting construction of the Greater Vernon Cultural Centre.

Cumming, who holds a Master’s in Community Economics and Planning, said he wanted to build on that growth and continue to lead the city as it tackles significant projects, such as upgrading Polson Park and Kin Race Track Park, enhancing creekside public spaces along BC, Vernon and Pottery Creeks, filling industrial lands, and completing the Cultural Centre. He also wanted to continue the growth of the city by supporting a wide mix of housing, commercial and industrial development, continue work to build climate change resiliency, and help the city evolve into a more livable, compact and affordable community.

“I am committed to lead our community as we work on these, and all of the many other issues that will make the work of City of Vernon council challenging and immensely rewarding over the next four years,” Cumming stated.

The Local General Election will take place October 17.
