PARKSVILLE — Traffic in all directions will now come to a stop traffic lights were installed at a busy highway intersection.

Traffic lights were installed at Exit 51, where travellers turn from Hwy. 19 to Hwy. 4A, replacing stop signs for those coming off Hwy. 19.

“Exit 51 has had increased traffic over the years with many people travelling to Coombs and through to Port Alberni, Sproat Lake, Tofino and Ucluelet,” a release from the ministry of transportation and infrastructure said.

“The ministry had previously reviewed the safety and performance of the intersection and found full signalization was warranted to improve public safety.”

The ministry said the upgrades make the intersection much safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
