RCMP debunk report of impersonating police officer

May 5, 2021 | 1:57 PM

One of the recent “fake cop” reports in B.C. has been investigated and resolved by Mounties.

RCMP in Trail looked into a report from a passing motorist who spotted a white pickup truck travelling westbound on Highway 3B on March 26, 2021, with what appeared to be flashing red and blue lights in the front grill of the truck.

“Further investigation carried out by Trail RCMP, which included the review of surveillance footage captured in the area along the provincial highway corridor, revealed that the vehicle in question was associated to a local private sector company responding to an emergency,” Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, spokesman for the BC RCMP in the Southeast District, said.

O’Donaghey said the RCMP encourages the public to continue being its eyes and ears and report any suspicious behaviour.

“So together we can make our communities even safer,” he said.

The development comes after RCMP in West Kelowna arrested a 64-year-old man on May 1 after an off-duty officer noticed a non-police vehicle with police lights in the grill appearing to have a car pulled over on Highway 97 and Drought Road in Peachland.
