B.C. Covid update Thursday: more vaccines on the way

Dr. Bonnie Henry had some positive news about vaccines in her Covid-19 update today.

The provincial health officer said British Columbia expects to receive one million doses of the Pfizer vaccine in the next month, including 276,000 doses next week.

“That means the age-based [vaccination] program will be accelerated and everybody will get their turn. In addition, our worker program will be able to be accelerated as well,” Henry said.

B.C. is also expected to get its first doses of the Johnson and Johnson single-dose shot next week, with plans for that to be announced soon.

“We are finalizing the plans for that, and we will share those plans with you early next week,” Henry said.

Currently people 58 and older can book a vaccine appointment on the Get Vaccinated website.

To date, 1,749, 375 doses of Covid vaccines have been administered in B.C., with 90,296 second doses.

At Thursday’s update, Henry reported 853 new Covid-19 cases, with 43 in the Interior and one more death, which was in Interior Health.

Elsewhere, there were 181 new cases in Vancouver Coastal Health, 574 in Fraser Health, 30 in Island Health and 25 in Northern Health.

There are 7,996 active cases, but said 503 people were in hospital with Covid-19, and 178 in critical care.

Henry said people aged 40 to 49, and 50 to 79, are increasing in the hospitalization numbers.

“Most of the people in hospital are people who have not been immunized, or it was within the period of time before their immune system was stimulated by the vaccine,” Henry commented.
