B.C. records lowest single-day COVID-19 case count in weeks — but 16 more deaths

Provincial health officials are reporting 566 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday (Dec. 8), the lowest single-day case count since November 19. There were 74 new cases within Interior Health.

The totals are included in an update to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control website.

The new cases bring the provincial total to 38,718 total cases since the pandemic began, spread through the province as follows:

  • 9,861 — Vancouver Coastal (up 136)
  • 24,558 — Fraser Health (up by 297)
  • 735 — Island Health (up by 11)
  • 2,339 — Interior Health (up by 74)
  • 1,132 — Northern Health (up by 48)
  • 95 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

There are 9,315 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C., with 352 people in hospital and 74 in critical care.

Within Interior Health, there are 636 active cases with 17 people hospitalized including four in critical care.

There have been 16 more deaths due to the virus, bringing the total number of deaths in B.C. to 543.

A total of 27,897 people are considered fully recovered from COVID-19, or 72 per cent of all recorded cases.

Interior Health update:

IH is reporting 74 new cases since yesterday, for a total of 2,339

·         637 cases are active and on isolation

·         Seventeen people are in hospital; three of them in ICU.

·         Total number of deaths in IH remains at six.

Update on McKinney long-term care home:

·         Today Interior Health can confirm 27 residents and 1 staff member have now tested positive for COVID-19 at McKinney long-term care in Oliver.

·         Targeted additional testing is occurring and will continue for all staff and residents; this includes mobilizing an Interior Health outreach testing team to expedite testing onsite.

·         Interior Health is working with the staff and administration at McKinney to ensure residents’ care and staffing levels are maintained, and that families are kept apprised of the developing outbreak.

·         Everyone’s condition is currently stable and no transmission has been detected in association with the South Okanagan General Hospital.

Note: all of these additional cases were lab confirmed after today’s data reporting cut-off, therefore they are not counted among the 74 new cases today, but will be reflected in tomorrow’s numbers.

Update on other outbreaks of note:

·         Seven cases at Mountainview Village in Kelowna.

·         Three cases at Village by the Station in Penticton.

·         An outbreak at the Royal Inland Hospital Patient Care Tower construction site is over. See information bulletin here.

Revelstoke cluster update – December 8, 2020:

·         14 active cases; all those individuals are self-isolating.

·         36 other individuals have recovered.

·         50 total cases

·         One additional case was confirmed since our last update on Friday, Dec. 4.
