Highway Landscaping To Go

They cost tens of thousands dollars to install and will be pricey to remove.

Vernon council has directed staff to remove the shrubs and trees along the Highway 97 median north of Stickle Road.

The work is expected to cost 50-thousand dollars.

Mayor Akbal Mund says the trees have been dying for years.

“They are so close to the road, as traffic goes by, especially in the winter, all the chemicals and salt get pushed up onto the trees. And anybody in the landscape business will tell you, that’s not good for the landscaping that’s there. It kills it,” Mund told Beach Radio News.

A letter is being sent to the business explaining the rationale behind the decision.

Mund says times have changed.

“If you look at projects now, they don’t do landscape in the middle. Look at the project in Kelowna on Highway 97, there is no landscaping in the middle because it does become a big maintenance issue,” adds Mund.
