Affordable & Energy Saving Housing Planned For Lake Country

A proposed housing development on the site of the former Owl’s Nest campground in Lake Country is expected to go ahead.

Fifty units would be built on the 6 acre site.

Mayor James Baker says the developer is proposing net zero energy.

“Every building will generate more energy with solar panels and use of all rhe new technology in building a house that can be actually energy positive.”

The surrounding area is agricultural and every buyer must be told of the potential of farm related noise.

“And ensure that every purchaser in the area understands that there is active agriculture around including sometime the use of helicopters and things.”

A public hearing has been held and the proposal will go back to a future council meeting.

Meanwhile, Council has given 2nd reading to zoning amendments that would lead to a large affordable housing project in the District’s downtown.

The project would see up to 200 units built in the Jensen and Hill Road areas.

Mayor Baker says the project is contingent on the developer getting funding from federal and provincial, affordable housing programs.

“It’s been designed in such a way that we’re looking at cycling and pedestrian, also not as many cars for the project.

Baker says the bylaws would normally call for more parking in theb area but because of the nature of the area it’s easier for people to walk or cycle to the downtown.
