Swan Lake Project Needs Volunteers

The Regional District of North Okanagan has extended the deadline for anyone interested in becoming a member of Wastewater Recovery Community Working Group.

The working group will inform and support the move toward construction of the North Okanagan Wastewater Recovery Project, which would provide sewer to residences and businesses in the Swan Lake corridor, the Township of Spallumcheen’s south-east industrial area, and portions of Okanagan Indian Band IR4.

The application deadline has been extended to October 26th.

Five to seven volunteers are needed.

The working group’s first tasks are to help build public awareness about the project and to inform RDNO property owners within the proposed service area about a petition starting this fall.

The project is contingent on senior government grant funding of 24.3 million dollars and approval from RDNO property owners within the service area for long-term borrowing 5.2 million dollars.

The remainder of funding for the project would be provided by an Okanagan Basin Water Board Sewerage Facilities Assistance Grant of 5.9 million dollars and 1.5 million coming from the Township of Spallumcheen reserves.

If the petition succeeds – and if senior government grant funding is awarded – the Working Group will then begin gathering community input on project design, construction, and start-up.
