Shuswap Schools Report Card Program Gets Thumbs Up

Feedback has been positive to a new reporting system rolled out in the last year for kindergarten to grade 8 in the North Okanagan-Shuswap School District.

The Communicating Student Learning Initiative involves teacher-parent-student conferences.

Official trustee Mike McKay says it’s been widely accepted.

“Even in its first year with it being a change as far as the quality of information and improvement in the quality of information, engaging with kids and the focus we were over 80 per cent of the people pleased with it last year.”

Many parents responded that the new report card was very clear on how their children were doing in school and was specific and individualized to their child.

McKay says it gives parents a better understanding of how their kids are doing.

“It’s aimed at promoting the focus on what kids are doing well at and why, what they need some attention to as far as remediating challenges and who can do what to help that happen.”

McKay says it’s really the first step in a conversation aimed at promoting learning and focus.

Both parents and teachers overwhelmingly supported continuing and even improving the process in the years ahead.
