Rail Open Official Opening

An official opening event is set to roll out for the Okanagan Rail Trail.

It will be held Sept. 27th at 11 am at the Oyama Boat Launch on Wood Lake Road in Lake Country.

“Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, attendees will take a celebratory 6.5 kilometre trip along the trail to Woodsdale Road,” says a news release.

The 49 kilometre trail from Coldstream to Kelowna has been under development since 2017, with 7.8 million dollars raised for it, in a public campaign.

While majority of the trail is open, the part between Kelowna International Airport and Duck Lake is not, as the lands are reviewed by senior government.

“The completion of Phase 1 of the Okanagan Rail Trail would not have been possible without the generous support of the community, the collaborative work of the municipal and regional partners, and funding from the Government of Canada and Province of British Columbia,”says Bob Fleming, Board Chair, Regional District of North Okanagan. “I invite everyone to join us in celebrating this accomplishment.”

More than 24 km of the trail follows lakeshore, creeks and unique natural environments.

The former rail line was bought by local governments and the BC government for 22 million dollars from Canadian National in 2014.
