People’s Party Not Diverting Tory Focus

The Conservative M-P for North Okanagan-Shuswap isn’t expressing much concern about efforts to form a local chapter of the new People’s Party of Canada.

The right of centre party is led by former Tory M-P Maxime Bernier.

Organizer Glen Walushka told Beach Radio News, he and former Tory nomination candidate Janet Green have left the Conservatives and are starting the process to find a candidate for the 2019 federal election

M-P Mel Arnold says after talking with people at events over the summer, his party’s focus is on winning next year’s election.

“There is always other interested individuals and groups out there. Right now we’re focused on defeating Justin Trudeau and the Liberals,” Arnold said in an interview with Beach Radio News.

Arnold (pictured) says M-P Leona Alleslev’s defection from the Liberals to the Tories Monday debunks criticism his party is too similar to the Liberals.

“We had a Liberal member who could no longer support the direction her party was going and crossed over the floor to join Andrew Scheer and our team of Conservatives. She obviously saw that there’s great differences in philosophy there, and has now come over and supported us.”

Arnold says concerns about Tories leaving the party to join the People’s Party is not something he’s hearing from his supporters.

“No calls on that. I’ve had a couple of emails, but most people are realizing that we will stay united behind Andrew Scheer, and we are the choice to defeat Justin Trudeau.”
