New Smoking, Vaping Rules

New Smoking, Vaping Rules

Sep 13, 2018 | 9:11 AM

The City of Vernon has updated its bylaw to outline where smoking and vaping of any substance in public places is allowed – or not allowed.

Communications officer Nick Nilsen says the new federal laws were one reason for the changes.

“With the introduction of the legalized recreational cannabis (Oct. 17), that was certainly one factor that made us put an eye on this bylaw, and while we were there, we decided to update it to include not only smoking but vaping as well,” Nilsen tells beach Radio News.

The bylaw allows smoking or vaping on roadways and sidewalks, but it’s banned in public parks, and lake accesses.

“It also includes the transit exchange and the transit stops,” says Nilsen.

Bylaw officers will be handing out warnings during the roll-out period for the new rules.

“Smokers and vapers are probably aware the rules have been, over the years, constantly tightening down on those sorts of activities. so I don’t think it will be a terrible surprise to many of them, especially when they consider it’s mostly aimed at the parks and public places,” says Nilsen.

Businesses and organizations will be allowed to designate smoking and vaping areas as long as they are clearly marked.
