New Candidate For Mayor

New Candidate For Mayor

Sep 12, 2018 | 12:30 PM

A former president of the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce is the fifth person to join the race for the city’s mayor.

Tom Dyas calls himself a successful entrepreneur, active community volunteer, long time Kelowna resident, and devoted family man.

Dias takes aim at current mayor Colin Basran, saying stronger leadership is needed for the City to make better progress on key issues.

“I feel we can do better. I believe by entering this election more serious discussions on the major issues will ensue. The community will be benefactor, as the issues will be covered with much more in-depth discussion and community input.”

Dyas has owned and operated TD Benefits for 32 years.

He is also Chair of the 2020 Memorial Cup Bid Committee.

“Today is a turning point for me. The time is right for me, and my family, as my business can now allow me to take on this new role. As a Chamber Director for the past eight years, and President for the last two years, I have an in-depth knowledge of the current issues facing our community and a proven track record of working through tough issues.”

Some of the key civic issues that Dyas believes are critical today include:
1. Financial accountability for city spending and tax hikes
2. Citizen safety and homelessness in the downtown core
3. Transportation and infrastructure
4. Water management
5. Sustainable, managed growth.
