Self defense course to prepare women while raising funds for Hospice Society

Oct 14, 2026 | 6:01 AM

A self defense course is being offered to help train up and prepare women while supporting local end-of-life care.

Sarah Draht and StrongHER, who won the 2026 Enterprize Challenge with Vernon’s first women’s only kickboxing and self defense academy, will host a community self-defense workshop Saturday, October 17.

“I’m doing this because there is a gap in practical safety education, and we need to fill it – this work is too important,” Draht explained in a release.

“You want to be prepared ahead of time, not trying to figure things out in the middle of a bad situation. It’s about putting tools in your toolbelt early so you know how to respond. The goal is always to get home safely.”

She added that prevention needed to be addressed before things get physical.

“Most self-defense classes jump straight into teaching women how to fight, but the real secret is psychology first,” Draht stated.

“Real safety is about awareness, trusting that quiet voice in your gut when something feels off, setting clear boundaries with your voice, and knowing how to get out of a bad situation safely. Fighting is always the very last resort.”

The self-defense expert just participated in Dancing with the Vernon Stars, and is offering the course in support of the North Okanagan Hospice Society. The course will be offered by-donation in support of the local end-of-life care organization and the programs and services it provides.

Draht also recently earned provincial certification as an Approved Advance Security Training Instructor, building off her previous background as a Second-Degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and frontline work in Protective Services.

People can register for the course online here.
