Scam alert as prescribed burn planned near Penticton

Oct 7, 2026 | 10:11 AM

Residents in wildfire-affected areas of the Okanagan-Similkameen are being warned about someone allegedly posing as a regional district employee and going door-to-door.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen says residents should not provide personal information and should contact police immediately if approached.

The warning comes as a prescribed burn is planned northeast of Penticton near Reservoir Road. The BC Wildfire Service, Okanagan Shuswap Natural Resource District and Penticton Indian Band will burn up to 30 hectares as part of a wildfire risk reduction project.

Smoke could be visible from Penticton, Naramata and Summerland, as well as from Highway 97. The burn will proceed only when weather and site conditions are suitable.

Officials say prescribed burning helps reduce wildfire fuels and restore forest health. Residents affected by smoke are advised to keep windows and doors closed, limit strenuous outdoor activity and take precautions if they have existing heart or lung conditions.
