Seniors Care Concerns

Cancelled senior’s living facility in Vernon raising concerns about supports in B.C.

A provincial association is raising the alarm over the cancellation of a proposed long-term care facility in Vernon.

The B.C. Care Provider Association said Parks Place Seniors Living had cancelled a 250-bed facility project in Vernon due to uncertainty around future operating costs and funding.

The BCCPA said this project was expected to deliver 150 long-term care beds, 100 assisted living units and additional seniors housing, and had been in development since 2007.

The association claimed this cancellation raised concerns about the sustainability of seniors’ care in B.C., despite the B.C. NDP announcing plans to move forward with previously cancelled long-term care provinces if re-elected to government.

“The current government has no discernable plan for seniors care,” Mary Polak, CEO of BC Care Providers Association, stated.

“There is no workforce strategy, there is no funding model and no plan to build the 20,000 new long-term care beds that will be needed by 2035.”

The BCCPA represents nearly 600 operators of long-term care, assisted living, home health, and independent living across the province. The organization has issued a five point plan and has urged the next government to follow the guide to expand seniors’ care, strengthen the workforce, ensure sustainable funding, support aging in place, and create fairer rules for retirement living.

“This cancellation should serve as a warning,” Polak said.

“Without a clear plan, more projects will be delayed or abandoned, leaving B.C. seniors with fewer care options and longer waits for the services they need.”

Park Place Seniors Living was not immediately available for a request for comment from Vernon Matters.
