Free swim to celebrate 60 years of the Vernon Aquatic Centre before move to ALC

Vernon is celebrating decades of operations with one final dip at the Aquatic Centre.

The pool will open for a free public swim from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday for the Last Splash celebration.

Though the pool will remain open to the public until the end of the month the event will celebrate the memories of generations of people who have used the facility.

The Aquatic Centre opened in May of 1966 as a six-lane, 25 metre pool, which was then renovated and expanded to include the existing aquatic amenities in 1994.

“The Last Splash event is an opportunity for community members to celebrate the Vernon Aquatic Centre, reconnect with friends and neighbours, and enjoy free swimming before the pool closes later this fall,” the City of Vernon said in a release.

“Residents of all ages are encouraged to attend and be part of this unique community celebration.”

Pool and recreation services will begin transitioning over to the Active Living Centre October 30 after construction has been completed. As per the last report from the city staff will then be trained and the facility will be open for some group events to prepare staff further before opening to the general public in early December.

The city noted existing memberships, passes and punch cards would be carried over and valid after the recreation services move into the ALC.
