Antwerp Deep Well water still safe, additional treatments done

The water quality within the Antwerp Deep Well continues to be monitored.

Over the summer, dozens of properties were moved onto the system due to the persistent drought and water scarcity conditions.

The well contains naturally high levels of manganese, a mineral that resulted in some people having brown water or particulate matter in the water.

On Aug. 25, the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) undertook additional treatment in the system to prevent chlorine from precipitating the manganese out of the solution and turning the water brown. 

The treatment did not remove the mineral but did improve the water colour, though the RDNO noted some people may still have brown water occasionally due to flow changes stirring up settled particles in the distribution system.

The manganese was also being continuously monitored, and the levels within the system remained below the maximum acceptable concentration limit and were safe to consume. However, anyone with health concerns relating to the water are advised to consult with their health care provider or contact Interior Health.
