Canada men fall to Cuba, in position for relegation in Volleyball Nations League

Jul 18, 2026 | 9:15 AM

OSAKA — Canada’s men fell 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 29-27) against Cuba on Saturday, falling into position for relegation from competing in the Volleyball Nations League next season.

After losing to Argentina and host Japan earlier in the week, Saturday was a must-win game for Canada. Cuba (3-8) pushed clear of Canada (1-10) to qualify for next year’s VNL.

The lowest-ranking team in the final standings is automatically relegated and replaced by the highest-ranking team in the world rankings that did not participate in the event this year. Although China (1-10) finished last, they still advance as host of the VNL Finals.

“The guys worked and fought every match,” coach Dan Lewis told VBTV. “It’s disappointing for our nation and for the guys. We just have to figure out to take that last step in attack in those important moments.”

Skyler Varga led the way for Canada on Saturday with 16 points, with Arthur Szwarc adding 10.

Miguel Angel Lopez Castro paced Cuba with 16 points and Marlon Yant Herrera had 14.

Canada will face Belgium (3-8) on Sunday in its final match.
