Fire near Dobbin and Elliott roads under investigation

West Kelowna Fire Rescue responded to reports of explosions and a fire near Dobbin Road and Elliott Road on Sunday afternoon.

Shortly before 4 p.m., crews were called to the area where they found landscaping and bushes burning at the base of a power pole that was also on fire. The pole contained live high-voltage electrical lines, prompting firefighters to establish a wide safety perimeter.

A nearby outbuilding connected to a fuel station was briefly at risk due to the proximity of the flames, while traffic was impacted in the area. Dobbin Road was reduced to a single lane for a short period, and Elliott Road was closed entirely during the incident.

Fire crews say they were unable to fully extinguish the fire until BC Hydro arrived to disconnect power due to the electrical hazard and risk of pole collapse. Once the power was shut off, firefighters were able to suppress the blaze.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue was assisted by RCMP, West Kelowna bylaw officers and Westbank First Nation law enforcement to keep the public at a safe distance and manage road closures.

The scene has been handed over to BC Hydro, which is assessing damage and ongoing power impacts. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
