With the Active Living Centre coming online in the fall, the City of Vernon and area municipalities have agreed to increase their recreation funding.

The city has cost sharing agreements with Coldstream and RCNO Areas B and C, which sees the other municipalities currently pay a combined $1.51-million through taxation to help cover recreation operations. This agreement also allows those residents to have lower rates when using the amenities.

The new agreement will see those contributions go up to $1.74-million in 2027, $1.99-million in 2028, and finally to $2.05-million in 2029.

“Recreation facilities and programs are an important part of what makes Greater Vernon a healthy and connected community,” said Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming.

“This agreement supports continued collaboration between our communities and helps ensure residents continue to have access to quality recreation opportunities and services throughout the region.”

The City of Vernon and the partner municipalities came together and created the new funding agreement through collaborative efforts in order to ensure all area residents have the ability to access the services and programs, and ensure they remained properly funded.

“Recreation is an important aspect to Coldstream residents, and we are looking forward to continued access to this vital service,” Ruth Hoyte, Mayor of Coldstream, said.

“By working together, we can ensure residents in Electoral Area B and C continue to benefit from high-quality facilities and programs, including the new Active Living Centre, in a way that is both sustainable and fair for all communities,” Bob Fleming, Director of RDNO Area B, stated.

“This agreement ensures our rural areas continue to have equitable access to services nearby. It’s an important step in maintaining strong regional partnerships and supporting recreation opportunities now and into the future,” Amanda Shatzko, RDNO Area C Director, said.

The agreement will come into effect January 1, 2027, and will last until December 31, 2029. Opportunities to negotiate terms of future agreements will be offered through the coming years.
