Water Conservation Measures

Stage 3 water restrictions in place

Jun 4, 2026 | 1:53 PM

Water restrictions have been increased in the North Okanagan.

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) implemented Stage 3 water restrictions for Greater Vernon water customers Thursday, June 4.

The RDNO said the decision to move to Stage 3 was based on declining water supply at the Aberdeen Plateau Dams and Kalamalka Lake, as well as historic high demand during the summer.

“The serious drought conditions the Greater Vernon community is facing are due to multiple factors: this year’s snowpack was significantly below average, snowmelt occurred earlier than usual, and precipitation has been below normal, resulting in reservoirs receiving far less water than expected,” the RDNO said in a release.

“At the same time, forecasts indicate warm, dry conditions will continue. These warmer temperatures have led to higher-than-usual water use earlier in the season, further stressing supply. As a result, GVW must act now to preserve enough water for essential needs throughout the summer and into the fall.”

Under Stage 3, lawn watering and filling of private pools are not permitted. However, micro-jet/drip irrigation and hand watering is permitted two days a week; new lawns and landscaping may be watered with a sprinkler for up to two weeks; pools may be topped up once a week but cannot be filled or refilled; and washing driveways, decks, patios, vehicles, boats and ATVs can only be done for health and safety reasons.

“The drought conditions we’re experiencing this year are serious and require all of us to take immediate action,” stated Chair of the RDNO Board of Directors Shirley Fowler.

“Every resident and business plays a critical role in protecting our water supply. By conserving wherever possible, both indoors and outdoors, we can help ensure there is enough water for essential needs throughout the summer and into the fall. We appreciate the community’s cooperation and shared commitment to using water wisely.”

Stage 3 Water Restrictions are mandatory for all customers within Vernon, Coldstream, parts of Spallumcheen, and RDNO Areas B, C, and D.
