Accessory Dwelling Unit Regulations

Coldstream zoning changing to allow more styles of secondary dwellings

Jun 5, 2026 | 2:13 PM

Coldstream is making it easier for people to build more housing on their properties.

The district will be changing its zoning regarding detached Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs).

Under the new regulations, one storey detached garden suites will no longer need to be located in the rear yard of a residential property, and will also now be able to include a basement suite.

Two storey carriage houses will still not be able to have basements under the change.

The ADU size will remain unchanged at a maximum of 90 m² and a minimum of 20.5 m².

The district also redefined townhouses to require 8 or more units, along with a shared common amenity space.

The zoning bylaw amendments will be adopted by Coldstream Council at the meeting Monday, June 8.
