RCMP launch investigation after suspicious Penticton fire

Jun 5, 2026 | 11:31 AM

RCMP are investigating a suspicious fire that forced the evacuation of nearby workers and residents and led to days of delays before investigators could safely enter the scene.

Police say significant safety hazards following the blaze initially prevented access to the site, delaying the start of a full forensic fire examination.

The scene was later deemed safe to enter on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, allowing specialized fire investigators from the RCMP and the Penticton Fire Department to begin their work.

The RCMP said the fire is being treated as suspicious and a criminal investigation is now underway.

Investigators are exploring all possible avenues to determine the cause of the fire and identify those responsible for what police are calling an arson.

In a statement, Superintendent Beth McAndie, Penticton RCMP detachment commander, thanked frontline responders and partner agencies for their efforts during the evacuation and fire suppression response.

McAndie said the situation was complex and required several days to secure approval to safely conduct a forensic examination of the scene.

Police said the investigation is in its early stages and no further details are being released at this time.
